DEER ARE WELCOMED GUESTS

I know many gardeners feel differently about deer and that I only have one year of gardening with them under my belt, so perhaps my frustration with them will grow.
For now however, I just love seeing them.

We were never going to see a deer in our neighbourhood in Toronto. Being closer to nature was one of the reasons we moved from Toronto to Winnipeg and seeing these awesome animals while out on my evening stroll I feel happy to be back home.

Tonight I saw three different deer during my dog walk the first two in the large park nearby.

Then, surprisingly, another with substantial antlers rubbing them against a neighbour's tree in their front yard. I walked up the street and it moved parallel for quite a distance until it came to this tree where it could reach up and eat the leaves that had never fallen to the ground. It stopped there and I must have watched it graze for 5 minutes before heading home.
Hope to see you again soon deer.
Oh, and by the way, everything I planted this fall is rated deer resistant.

  1. Oh no! The hundreds of tulips you planted ARE NOT DEER RESISTANT! Actually, rabbits and deer love the tulips! You may need to start spraying with deer replant sprays as soon as the tulips emerge ! Also, you could create a cage around the tulips with bird netting until you are ready to take your pictures!

    1. Daniela,
You are so right. I am taking a big chance with my tulips. I did not plant them for years because they got eaten but in this new location I am going to give it a try. It seemed as if the deer only came up the driveway in the fall when they are getting ready for winter, so with any luck they may survive. I probably should have tested out my theory with 25 tulips instead of 150, but there you have it, they are in the ground now!

  3. Nice to hear this Derek.... some years the deer have eaten the tulips or iris flowers and other years not and usually not all of them. I guess it depends on the available browse for them in the spring... Lovely dreamy photos...Hope you have a wonderful holiday season ..Michelle

    1. I need to keep my focus on buying plants they will not enjoy that much and not get distracted by pretty flowers and forget about the deer while I am browsing in a nursery or a catalogue, which has certainly happened in the past. I am taking a risk introducing tulips this year, so with me luck!

  4. I like that you enjoy these wild creatures. I had the pleasure to enjoy these wonderful creatures almost every day when I lived at the countryside. Love them :)

    1. Huldra, We just love seeing them walking about the neighbourhood. Knowing that they are here it is up to me to try and plant lots of things they will not want to eat.
