MACRO MONDAY - foxglove and bee

I have tried for years to grow Foxglove.
First at the Ontario cottage in a wooded area beside our path I learned the hard way they were not getting enough sun, so then I tried to naturalize them along the side of the road where would receive more sun but where they quickly became choked out by native Bracken without me there to help keep the ferns at bay.

Last year in Winnipeg I added them in two locations but "the coldest winter in living memory" turned them to mush.

Still I persist, inspired by the Assiniboine Park gardens where they bloom en-masse only a a five minute bike ride from my home.

This year in the Monet Garden I believe I have found the right combination of rich organic soil and enough sunlight.  Let us hope that with some mulching they make it through our cold winters and their gorgeous spires return again next ear to provide much needed habitat for our bees.

MACRO ASTER - shifting light

Despite being macros it is not the detail in the shots of this tall purple Aster from my Monet Garden that I want to draw your attention to.

It is the colour.
They were taken immediately one after the other but from a slightly different angle that changed the lighting and changed the colour.

I love this reminder that we are dependent on our senses, our senses in turn dependent on their inputs.
The flower did not change between photos.
I changed.

A simple metaphor for much of life.

MACRO - bachelor's button

When I talk about wanting more blue flowers in my front Monet Garden this is what I am talking about.

This Centauree "Jubilee Gem" is one I sowed directly into my front lasagna garden this past spring. The plants are much taller than the 6" the packet predicts. I daresay they are 'leggy'; my entire front garden gets less sun than predicted.

Today for the first time I smelled one and was pleasantly surprised.  I have been feeling the pressure of much to do before the cold weather sets in and this gentle reminder of the value of literally stopping to smell the flowers was most welcome.

MACRO MONDAY - bachelor's buttons

I've been spending so much time talking about my Sun Garden that you may be wondering if I have blooms in any of my other gardens.
My front Monet Garden is blue and purple but the colour of these beauties is convincing me that I need to move away from purples and only add more blue.  Next year in the portion of this garden closest to the house (where I held off on planting last year) I will be adding blue Delphinium in the sunny corner and Blue Phlox where there is more shade.

Above is a shot of 'Jubilee Gem' Bachelor's Buttons (Cornflower) with Vinca and Iris foliage that I direct sowed in the garden this year even though it is zoned as a 5 and I am a 3.

Very fine foliage, relatively petite plants, let's hope some magically reappear next year.

I definitely need to add more blue flowers to this garden, I just love them!

MACRO MONDAY - asiatic lily

I love the simplicity of taking all  my shots (macro or otherwise) with my iPhone since I pretty much have it with me at all times, so I went with an Olloclip that pops on and off of my phone with ease.

Here is an Asiatic Lily from my sun garden with my regular lens.

Here is the same flower with my macro lens.

I am thrilled with the results.

What camera do you use for your macro shots?

DAYLILY & PEONIES

 Bright, sunny daylily.

I believe this may be a Peony but I cannot recall for certain. This image is so soft and gentle I can picture it being used in a shampoo ad - wouldn't you want your hair to smell like this?

Rare colour for a Peony.

WEEKEND FLOWERS - gaillardia

I have eleven Blanket Flowers beginning to bloom in my Sun Garden; this one is aptly named "Arizona Sun".

This one is called "Red Sun", equally appropriate for the Sun Garden.

MACRO MONDAY - allium 3

This is the third week in a row I have featured the same Allium.
This week we focus in on just one of the many individual flowers that make up an Allium sphere.

Last week they were out but not yet open.
Two weeks ago they were just announcing their intent to bloom.
