AT THE FEEDER

My suet feeder is not in my garden because the best view is actually out of our kitchen window, making the occasional dirty saucepan a pleasure.

It hangs closer to the barbecue than I would like because it has to be tied to the far end of the branch to keep this big gray squirrel from reigning as 'king of the feeder'.  Instinct sends him scurrying away, momentarily terrified by a rap on the glass, but he is back withing seconds - and without a mortgage to pay he was bound to win our waiting game.

I would not mind the squirrel if it did not scare aware the other visitors like this White Breasted Nuthatch, who I also see at the seed feeder in the Moon Garden.

This Downy Woodpecker is the most frequent feeder here and one I never see at the 'regular' feeder.

Who else might be snacking here while I am at the office?

  4. I know the birds are happy to have the suet especially in the snowy cold weather.

    1. They certainly seem to be enjoying it, especially that wild-eyed woodpecker.

  5. I wish those particular kind of woodpeckers would show up in our backyard. We only get Golden Fronted Woodpeckers. Ahhhhhhhhh, to see one like you had would be a great day for me. Excellent photos. The squirrel is adorable.

    1. Anni, I had never heard of that type of woodpecker but it looks quite interesting as well with its yellow patches. The squirrel is cute, as long as he doesn't bully the birds too much.

    1. Funnily enough I don't think I have ever seen the red-breasted version. Thanks for stopping by.

  7. What pretty little visitors! Even the squirrel is cute, but in a naughty, thieving way!

  8. Derek. I am sure you are saving some lives with the food and suet. You can get suet feeders that have a cage around them or are upside down which makes it hard for the squirrel to get, but as long as we have this very cold winter, the squirrel will keep trying.... Michelle

The squirrels are very persistent that is for sure. How nice to think that I could be saving lives. Next time I see a suet feeder on sale I am going to buy more.

  9. I love to feed all the little creatures. We are on the Texas Gulf Coast so we seldom see snow and suet blocks mostly melt or go rancid. But we do have goldfinches, bluejays, cardinals, and others along with the squirrels and raccoons. Lovely pictures!

    1. Thanks Florence, I wish I had more brightly coloured Cardinals here but at least that Downy Woodpecker has a splash of red. Keep up your feeding, I am sure they all appreciate it.
